The Black Twig Pickers sind Isak Howell, Nathan Bowles and Mike Gangloff. Mike Gangloff war neben dem 2009 verstorbenen Jack Rose Gründungsmitglied der Drone/Noise/Folk Formation Pelt. Gangloff und Bowles treten heute noch als Pelt auf, Howell gelegentlich auch. "Ironto Special" ist das fünfte Album des Trios aus dem Südwesten Virginias und ihr erstes für das renomierte Chicagoer Label Thrill Jockey. Das Album enthält Versionen traditioneller Songs der Appalachen Region und zwei Eigenkompositionen. Die Instrumentierung ist ausschliesslich akustisch und umfasst neben den heute noch üblichen Instrumenten Gitarre, Fiedel und Banjo auch inzwischen weniger oft genutze wie Waschbrett, Fiedelbogen, Mundharfe und Maultrommel. Die CD Version erscheint als 4-Panel im Mini-LP Stil als Klappcover mit einem ausfaltbaren Noten- und Stimmblatt für jeden Song.
