 DESCRIPTION:
There's only a faint, minor water stain in the lower left corner of the mid-19th century English antique hand colored woodblock engraved print. It barely intrudes upon the pictorial field and isn't noticeable from any appreciable distance. The original print was hand colored in blue, yellow and reddish-orange opaque watercolor paint. The woodblock engraved print is of a scene rather early in the French and Indian Wars, which pitted French and British colonial interests in the Americas, directly opposed to each other, with various Native American tribes as allies, in a fight to the death for control of vast stretches of territory, principally in the northeast, the Great Lakes and in the Ohio river valley. This blue, red and yellow hand-colored woodblock print features a young Major George Washington, then a British military commander, seen in a bark covered Native American canoe on the Ohio river, with perhaps a Mingo or Mohawk Native American guide at the bow of the canoe and two other assistants. It's in its original oval mahogany frame with a gilt liner. Circa 1859 to 1860, just before the beginning of the US Civil War. Very handsome.
