AT THE GATES have been tirelessly flying the flag of melodic death metal of the Gothenburg school for over 30 years. Dark and at the same time anything but blunt, AT THE GATES have always been. With their 7th studio full lenght album ''The Nightmare Of Being'', the 5 Swedes go one better in 2021. While Tomas Lindberg continues to growl and shout in a refreshingly powerful way, the instrumental fraction manages to perfectly harmonise heaviness, melodicism and progressiveness. In general, the instrumentation of the 10 tracks on "The Nightmare Of Being" deserves special attention. The range of instruments used on the album is enormous, bassoon and bass tuba, cello and clarinet, flute and organ, violin and viola. One could think that AT THE GATES have recorded a classical album, but maybe it will be another classic in the band history, who knows... In any case, AT THE GATES once again exceed the expectations. ''The Nightmare Of Being'' is the melodic death metal album you would expect from a genre legend and yet so much more. Fans of progressive sounds, as you usually get to hear from OPETH and their ilk, should feel just as entertained here as friends of classic melodic death metal.
