A superb and rare image of the Laverda 1000 3CL, ridden by the British riders Cash and Melody, in action during the 1972 edition of the prestigious French Bol d’Or endurance race.

The Laverda was entered by the British Laverda importer Roger Slater. It was jointly prepared by the Laverda factory and Slater. It was a steady top ten lapper which was quite an achievement in the highly competitive starting field. Unfortunately, gearbox trouble cut the race short. Roger Slater has done a lot for the Laverda brand, he also was responsible for the birth of the magnificent Laverda Jota 1000.

In the USA, Laverda was also marketed under the American Eagle name.

In the early 1970’s, long distance racing was extremely popular in Europe. These events were responsible for the quick gaining popularity of the heavier sports motorcycle, like the Ducati 750 SS, the Moto Guzzi V7 Sport, the Benelli 650 Tornado, the BMW R 90 S Daytona and the Laverda SFC 750 and 1000 3 CL; but also the Japanese sports motorcycles like the Kawasaki 350, 500 and 750 triples, but also heavy four strokes like the Honda CB 750 Four. Riders that would make world fame, like Franco Uncini and Marco Lucchinelli, all participated in these races before they made the steps to the Grand Prix World Championship racing scene.
