DESCRIPTION

Vintage original painted art pottery charger by Gregorio Prestopino (1907-1984). Reminiscent of the impressionist work especially of Matisse this unusual piece is a break from his normal medium of oil on canvas. depicting a nude female bather in a pool the bold use of color, form and body shape definitely defines the abstract expressionism that he is known for as well as a hint of cubism. This piece most likely dates to the period of his life in the late 1950s when he was exhibiting abstract tendencies with mythical figures and influences. Much of his more cubist work uses brightly contrasting colors and involves human forms. Wet, sensuous color areas appeared on his works as in this one which illustrated Prestopinos vitality for life. during the period.

Prestopino was born in New York City's Little Italy. At 14 he was awarded a scholarship to the National Academy of Design, with Charles Hawthorne. Early in his career he came under the influence of the French Impressionists, but was soon drawn to the American realists of the Ashcan School painters, whose work led him directly to the study of urban life. He won the 1972 Rome Prize.
