Delightful pair of 19th century Continental gilded and engraved white metal lorgnette/opera glasses in very good condition. They are in the Gothic Revival style, which could date them to the mid-Victorian period and a sign of quality is that the design is different on either side. The spring action is slightly stiff, but still works and the glass lenses are in good condition. There is a tiny and illegible maker's mark on one edge- possibly E&L in a diamond shape? Approx. measurements: L 8cms (inc. chain fob) W 2cms at widest point D 0.75cms. Weight 26.1g.

This could have been worn as part of a chatelaine or threaded with a chain or ribbon and worn as a pendant. It is a lovely memento of an elegant past era, but still useable today.
