An antique, most probably Victorian, ceramic strawberry set decorated with super mop head chrysanthemums and finished with a scrolled carrying handle. The original and matching creamer and sugar basin are decorated likewise. These sit comfortably within the indents to the tray. A super fluid gold or gold toned line to the rim of the tray emphasises the beauty of its stylised foliate form. The maker is ‘SB&S’ but alongside this the tower, crown and lion mark is not easily recognisable. It is not the anchor mark usually found with these initials. We have therefore estimated the period in which it was made by the aesthetics and signs of age to the piece.
It is in good condition for its age but there are two very tight and stable hairlines, one to the handle and one beneath the handle to the body. We have supplied images of both. As you can see the crazing is only very light. The decoration is still bright and largely intact as you can also see in the images but the gilding to the edges is rubbed including that to the handle. There is the expected rubbing to the reverse where the piece has rested and serves as further confirmation of its age.
