Borosilicate glass funnels containing fritted discs are especially useful where filter paper would be attacked by the material being filtered or would interfere with the recovery of small amounts of suspected solids. This is a small customized fritted Büchner missing labels that would reveal manufacturer name, catalogue number, or fritted disc porosity.

Having never seen a fritted funnel modified like this before, and with no recollection of how we came to possess it, it is hard to say what it might be for. Possibly someone made it to collect a solid under argon supplied by the sidearm, reasoning that gas is heavier than air and would tend to keep air from being sucked through the solid. It is noteworthy that the bottom tubing is very thin and the top edge is not beaded, unlike most similar funnels. It is perhaps most likely that this is just the right tool for an analysis method unknown to the seller.

Specs (approximate): capacity, ~3 mL (below sidearm); disc outer diameter, 10 mm; maximum outer diameter, 14 mm; sidearm height above disc, 38 mm; height above disc, 76 mm; overall length, 106 mm; sidearm outer diameter, 5 mm; bottom stem outer diameter, 2.6 mm
