CHARLES R. SCHUMM, 93, of Lima, Ohio, died Saturday, Nov. 17, 2007, 9:15 a.m., at Baton Rouge Senior Health Facility. He was born on April 29, 1914, in Rockford, Ohio, to Jennetta A. Bury and Charles Schumm.


He was a retired Warrant officer from the Army National Guard, after 30 years of service. He served in World War II and Korea. He had also worked at Clark Equipment and American Century Security. He was a member of Lima Baptist Temple, and Tri County Gun Collectors, having served as its President. He was also a member of Eagles Aerie 370 Lima, V.F.W. Post 1275, Lima. He was a great storyteller, relaying many war stories.


He married Marlene Conley in 1947; she preceded him in death in 1994. In 2002, he married Velma Harden Byrne; she preceded him in death in 2007. He is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Stanley E. Pendlebury of Hilton Head, S.C.; granddaughter, Ann Turner of Lima; step-grandsons, Michael (Patty) Montgomery and Brian (Teresa) Montgomery, both of Lima; step-granddaughters, Tina (Michael) Kirkendall of Harrod, Ohio, Anne (Christopher) Horn and Lynne Montgomery, both of Lima; 14 step-great-grandchildren; 11 step-great-great-grandchildren; and several other stepchildren and step-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by a stepson, Fredrick Montgomery.


Funeral service is 10 a.m. Tuesday at Lima Baptist Temple, with visitation one hour prior to service. The Rev. Gary Hohman officiating. Visitation is from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home, Lima. Burial in Woodlawn Cemetery with Military Graveside service by V.F.W. Post 1275, Lima. Memorials to Senior Citizens Services.
