5-piece, Japanese printed cotton tableware set; perfect for serving tea or other beverages. One 12 1/2" x 17 3/4" placemat and four approx. 4" x 4" coasters are all double-sided, made from two pieces of the same fabric folded in at the hems and machine sewn together around the perimeter. Three different patterns: double-ended spirals (placemat and 1 coaster are printed rustic red, and 1 coaster dark blue); an eight-diamond star or flower in dark blue (1 coaster); and interlocking six-pointed “stars” in light blue dashed lines on blue*. Small ivory-colored paper label printed in Japanese affixed at bottom right of each piece.**

*The last pattern, called Asanoha, is among the best known of Japanese Wagara (traditional patterns with hidden meanings originally used on kimono and textiles). An auspicious pattern, Asanoha means "hemp leaf" and represents the vitality, vigorous growth and natural resistance of the hemp plant.

**Please note: the dimensions printed on the labels - 33cm x 45cm for the placemat and 11cm x 11cm for the coasters - are slightly larger than the actual measurements. The coasters also vary a bit in size, ranging from 4" to 4 3/8" on their sides.

Almost certainly bought in the 1990s at Ginza Things Japanese, a popular gift shop in Washington, DC (in business, 1955-2014). Never used; and packed away for at least 15-20 years.
