"DUANESBURG — Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. from the Fredendall funeral home in Altamont for Seward Van Auken, 51, widely known insurance man and operator of a Duanesburg apiary, whose body with, a bullet wound in the head was found Saturday in a field near Lee's Church, Town of Knox. A verdict of suicide has been given.

Coroner Arthur S. Tompkins of Berne said a note was found but its contents was not disclosed. The body was discovered about 9:15 a.m. Saturday by Marvin Truax and Harold Warner, both of the Town of Knox, who were hunting in the vicinity.

According to state police. Van Auken's body was about 15 feet off the road, and a truck owned by him was parked nearby. Police said a 25-20 caliber rifle was found near the body.

According to state police, Van Auken had been missing since shortly after 9 o'clock Friday morning, but this was not reported until Saturday. A bachelor, Van Auken lived with Mr. and Mrs. Edward Van Zandt, in Van Auken's home on the Duanesburg-Schenectady road.

State Police Sergeant E. P. Conway and Corporal G. F. Hurley of the BCI investigated.

Van Auken was born in the Town of Knox, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Van Auken. The family had lived in Duanesburg for many years. Van Auken's insurance business had made him widely known in Schenectady, Albany and Schoharie counties. For years he operated an apiary here. He was among the first Duanesburg farmers to carry out extensive reforestation projects.

Van Auken is survived by a sister, Mrs. Mildred Crounse, of Duanesburg road.

Officiating at the funeral Tuesday afternoon will be Rev. James E. Morecraft, pastor of St John's Lutheran Church of Altamont. The funeral home will be open Monday night from 7 to 9. Burial will be at Fairview cemetery, Altamont."
