A beautiful and unique pair of Victorian Era 4 lens "Double D" sunglasses in impeccable, museum like condition.

Sometimes referred to as train, railway, or carriage spectacles as they were once popular with Victorian passengers to protect the eyes during travel. Very hard to find these with all four lenses intact and in such outstanding condition.

The frame is blue steel or steel-alloy in superb condition; still sturdy and looks great, without tarnishing/oxidation. Low-profile "D" shaped frames and the temple arms hinge well with spiral coil stem ends.

Side lenses rotate as to be positioned for either side protection, or they can fold upon the front lenses for double protection in cases of very bright light.

The Sapphire blue tinted lenses are in impeccable condition (non-prescription/no magnification) and easy to see through. Most likely the oldest and finest antique eyewear we have offered to date. Exact age unknown but a safe educated guess is mid 1800's. You can learn more of the history of 19th Century spectacles here at the College of Optometrists, Britain, online museum archive:
