Margaret Mitchell's "Gone with the Wind" is a romance novel set in Georgia during the American Civil War and the Reconstruction era that followed. The novel centers on its protagonist, Scarlett O'Hara, and her struggle to rebuild and sustain her wealth, which had been lost as a result of the fall of the Confederacy. Using any means necessary, Scarlett regains what she has lost, in large part due to Rhett Butler, a scoundrel and scallawag with a bad reputation. The trials and tribulations of Scarlett and her unwavering perseverance make this novel an American classic. Winning a Pulitzer Prize in 1937, "Gone with the Wind" went on to become an Academy Award-winning film in 1939.
