Description: This uncataloged, East Coast-produced, 4.5 inch diameter cloth patch of the Buffalo Bison of the International League was intended to be placed on clothing such as Letterman’s Jackets.  The logo is created with blue, chenille-like puffed embroidery directly above an off-white soft felt background.  The reverse side is a resilient canvas base with some spots of staining, foxing and both sides are of the highest quality.  Although there is some edge wear, chipping, and some bends, making it technically Good to Very Good condition, it is close to 75 years old and still in extraordinary condition with tremendous visual appeal.

It was obtained as part of an exclusive collection of 25 different cloth patches including 17 different, which predominantly focused on Boston and Northeastern sports teams as well as the Pacific Coast League (PCL).  One of the patches features the Falmouth All Stars, who were the champions of the Cape Cod League in 1946.  Another patch showcases the Portland Beavers.  Although the Portland Beavers were called the Lucky Beavers during World War II and even had a bomber named after them, the “Lucky Beavers” moniker, which is used on one of these patches, enjoyed widespread usage in 1946.  Ted Williams’ first year back from serving in World War II was in 1946 and the image of him on one of these patches as well as his facsimile autograph style directly corresponds to iconography from that season.  Further, this was the only non-equipment product we are aware of which Ted Williams endorsed in 1946--the year the Boston Red Sox competed in the World Series.  Another of the featured teams, the Boston Celtics, first played in the BAA (Basketball Association of America) in 1946-47.  As a result, the highest probability is that this cloth patch is dated to 1946, although it could possibly have been manufactured as well as distributed as late as 1947.
