Background:
According to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, the U.S federal government stopped printing $1,000 bills in 1945. For the most part, it wasn’t cost-effective to print new series since each required engraving new plates for small print runs. Some bills stayed in circulation for the next two decades, until the Federal Reserve recalled them in 1969. At that time, the federal government discontinued all high-denomination bills. According to the government, they discontinued the bills because of a lack of use, although it was actually due to the fact that the bills were used for illegal activity, such as money laundering and counterfeit issues.

The BEP printed several versions of the $1,000 Federal Reserve Note(FRN) featuring the portrait of President Grover Cleveland on the front. The last $1,000 bill rolled off the presses in 1945 and it was formally discontinued 24 years later in 1969. Like all of the similar large bills, the $1,000 bill remains legal tender. In 1969, the Federal Reserve began taking the high-denomination currency out of circulation and destroyed large bills recalled from the banks. Only a few remain available today.
