[WILBERFORCE BIBLE; AUTOGRAPH COPY, SIGNED]

THE FOUR GOSPELS IN GREEK

From the Personal Collection

of the William Wilberforce Family

With Interleaved Manuscript Notes of

Bishop Samuel Wilberforce (1805-1873)

Son of William Wilberforce (1759-1833)

London, 1819

[Samuel Wilberforce, Bishop of Oxford]. SAMUEL WILBERFORCE'S ANNOTATED NEW TESTAMENT: Novum Testamentum: juxta exemplar millianum. Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1819.

Bishop Wilberforce's interleaved copy of the Gospels from the Greek New Testament with copious unpublished manuscript annotation from the early part of a career that culminated in his famous clash with T.H. Huxley and Robert Owen over Darwin's evolutionary theory.

The text is interleaved throughout with the blank inserts bearing Wilberforce's extensive annotation to the first two Gospels and reduced intensity for Luke and John - around 50 pages with annotation, ranging from a few words to a full page. While the biblical text is in Greek, the Wilberforce manuscript is predominantly in English.

Samuel Wilberforce was the third son of William Wilberforce, the famed campaigner against the slave trade and human bondage.

Autograph copy, signed.
