Based on the critically acclaimed novel of the same name, this series aired for 8 seasons and provided a hopeful, yet honest look at life in the new South. Set in fictional southern towns, the show centers on Bill Gillespie (Carrol O'Connor) as a small town sheriff who tries to solve crimes and catch criminals with the help of his capable investigator, Virgil Tibbs and police lieutenant, Bubba Skinner. Bill must navigate tricky small-town politics where racial tensions often run high.

Season 8 consists of 4 TV Movies and is considered the final season of IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT series.
