Whilst modern inflatable and self-inflating mattresses have largely replaced these closed-cell EVA camping mats, these mats still do have their place with campers and backpackers.
These mats only weigh 385 grams, so weight is not so much of an issue, however the bulky pack size often is. That said, at just 385 grams, strapping one to the outside of your rucksack you would hardly know it's there.
At 12mm these Karrimor mats are the thicker ones, so do not mistake these for the 6mm mats often used as Yoga mats, etc. Whilst not the most comfortable mats to sleep on, where these mats do shine is there insulation value, especially with a foil side. The closed-cell foam is water resistant and non-absorbent, a good insulator, very durable, and because it is not inflatable, it will never fail if it is punctured with something sharp.
Closed-cell foam mats come into their own when used as a protective barrier underneath more vulnerable self-inflating mats and air mattresses, and really make a difference when camping and backpacking in cold weather due to the additional insulation from the cold ground that they provide.
