DAY OF THE BOMB: Countdown to Hiroshima by Dan Kurzman. New York: McGraw-Hill, 1986. First Edition; First Printing. Illustrated. Hardcover with dust jacket.

The book discusses the decision to drop the atomic bomb on Japan by telling the stories of the key Americans and Japanese in the drama.

From the dust jacket flaps: “Day of the Bomb vividly explores the momentous decision to drop the atomic bomb on Japan -a decision that would thrust the world into a new and perilous era. Dan Kurzman skillfully interweaves the stories of the key American and Japanese players in that drama as they try to master destiny, only to become its pawns. Here are newly installed President Truman, who was terrified by the thought of using the bomb, but even more by the thought of history's judgment if he failed to use it; Emperor Hirohito, who desperately wanted to end the war, but found he was powerless to do so; scientist Klaus Fuchs, who helped build the bomb so he could hand the details over to Stalin; Prime Minister Suzuki, whose dread of an assassin's bullet inadvertently triggered an atomic bomb; Leo Szilard, J. Robert Oppenheimer, and others - men driven, by egoism and idealism, fear and fancy, prisoners of their own backgrounds, dreams, and delusions, men who struggled to solve their moral dilemmas and gratify their ambitions as they found themselves caught up in a machine they could not control, a countdown they could not stop.”
