Scarification can be accomplished a couple ways. In most cases we use an overnight to three-day soak in distilled water then on to stratification. Alternatively for some seed simply overwintering outdoors may be a better option.
Stratification can be accomplished a number of ways which are well described through multiple sources online. We prefer to cold stratify in the refrigerator using distilled water and sterile sponges or towels. The length of stratification required depends on the specific seed. Pines normally require around a 30 day cold stratification while most maples require closer to 90 days. It is important to plan your stratification to end near the last frost in your area to ease their transition from seed to seedling.
