WARWICK CASTLE.
The chief glory of Warwick is its castle; next to this, St. Mary's Church, near the centre of the town. A Saxon castle existed at the time of the Conquest. The earldom has been held by some of the most celebrated names in history, including the great Kingmaker and the unfortunate Dukes of Clarence. The castle stands on the bank of the Avon, rising almost immediately above the stream, and with the grand Lebanon cedars on the bank, presents a scene of marvellous beauty. It contains various pseudo-relics of the mythical Guy of Warwick, the celebrated Warwick vase, and other valuable works of art; but many of its treasures unfortunately perished during a fire in 1871. Warwick Castle is one of the few feudal fortresses which have been continuously inhabited down to the present time.
