Rare, Early 19th Century Boxed Sextant: Excellent Condition. Purchased in 2001 directly from John F. Rinaldi, noted dealer in all things nautical in Kennebunkport, Maine. Mirror, and color filters all intact and operable. The various screw heads on this instrument are notably in crisp condition without the "butching" as is often seen on these old instruments. Thomas Jones is one of the most notable of the early London instrument makers/sellers. He proudly states on the beautiful, original box-label that he was a former pupil of Jesse Ramsden who pioneered an accurate engraving engine for the angle/scales on octants and sextants. The original screwdriver is present in the set; there is a "latch" on the floor of the box for some unknown similar "tool." This fine instrument dates from the period 1810-1814 when Jones operated from No.21 Oxenden Street in London (note that address scribed onto the ivory nameplate). Later, he was situated at Charing Cross Road. A rare find these days for the serious collector!
