Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome.

You are looking at a quality 1st generation dynamic microphone manufactured by Electro Voice and sold under license to The Stromberg Carlson Corp. E.V also sold this very model mic to DuKane, Newcomb and Ampex during the early 1950's to early 1960's. This is the S.C MD-38S model. This 636 mic was actually made for almost 20 years and ended as the 2nd generation 636 in the late 1960's but this model is the 1st generation. I have never seen a 2nd generation Stromberg Carlson variant microphone before.

It should be noted that the MD-38S mic comes with the short cable shown in which to operate.

Pic # 2 shows this very model mic in an old E.V catalog along with some other models of E.V from that era. This mic was an affordable, quality dynamic mic for it's time and was used for general broadcasting purposes as well as use as a harp mic for brass instruments and even with a harmonica if mounted to a stand.

The 636 mic has a 4 pin arrangement and is actually dual Z depending on how you wire the 4 pin connector but this mic is set at high Z.

I call this the Jack Ruby mic because this was his favorite type of microphone when he spoke to his audience in his Dallas strip club night after night as seen in pic # 3. Jack Ruby shot and killed Lee Harvey Oswald of course sealing his legacy in American history. The name has stuck since I learned of his preference for this microphone.

This 636 variant works and has a like new signal currently set at high impedance. These mics are quite rugged being built like a tank. The High Z setting gives you more of an old school "rockabilly" sound that lacks any bass. The polished chrome housing is pretty nice overall showing some lite chrome loss on the barrel exposing the brass material underneath. Some tiny scratches and scuff marks here and there  but otherwise this mic is pretty nice overall. This is far above average for a mic of this age. This MD-38S has an impressive luster and it's 100% original. The on / off switch and joint mechanism work fine and the threading for the cable and stand are perfect.

The cable provided is in very good shape and 7 inches in length. It's soft, pliable and free of any cracks or dry rot.

It has the standard male Switchcraft XLR end connector too so simply attach a longer XLR cable and you are in business. It should be noted however that you need to use a female XLR to male 1/4 inch cable. An XLR to XLR will not work.

 I would rate this mic a conservative 7 + on a scale of 1 - 10. I rated it at "very good".

Mic will screw onto any desk or floor stand you have.

MICROPHONE STAND SHOWN IS NOT PART OF THIS SALE...USED FOR DISPLAY PURPOSES ONLY.

As with all my vintage microphones...
