Fantastic vintage Chelsea Safari Chair designed by Maurice
Burke for Arkana Furniture wearing its original cognac faux leather or vinyl with
a teak frame, tubular black metal runners, and steel screw details. Beautiful
condition, keeping in mind that this is vintage and not new so will have signs
of use and wear. There are a couple small nicks in the vinyl and one small tear
in the arm sling that have been reglued & repaired. Please see photos and
zoom in for details. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa, 1960’s.

is accented with oversized steel rivets that are both decorative AND
functional. And these arms!! Curved in all the right places, covered in the
elegant cognac faux leather, and ergonomically pleasing! It is simply STUNNING!
Planning on going on Safari any time soon? We’ve got you covered! LOL… not
really, we wouldn’t recommend it for an actual safari; however, as with safari
chairs, this one is designed to be totally disassembled and it packs flat for
convenient shipping and easy moving. This incredible chair is versatile and
stylish enough to go in practically ANY room and will blend in beautifully with
multiple décor preferences whether MCM or mid-century modern, modern,
maximalist, minimalist, or industrial. It would be great in your dressing room,
in the sitting room next to an accent table, or at the entry as a fabulous spot
to remove your shoes.
Arkana Furniture was founded in Falkirk, Scotland with
offices in Bath. They were best known for the production of the Tulip Chairs.
In the mid to late 60’s, the Christie Tyler Group took over Arkana, which also
included Avalon Furniture and the Bath Cabinet Makers in Bath, England.
There is little information out there about Maurice Burke
however, throughout our extensive research and a few quotes from a conversation
on “Design Addict,” we know that he was born in the UK in 1921 and he died in
2013. He had several patents, designed for Arkana in 1960-1970’s, and he owned
Burke Inc. which was located in Dallas, Texas. Brunswick acquired Burke Inc. in
1963.
