Offset poster/cartel announcing the play "La Muerte" by Emilio S. Belaval, under the direction of Piri Fernández, and created for the 14th Puerto Rican Theater Festival of 1996

The signature of the poster designer, Gabriel Suau, appears in the upper right corner.  Suau is a Spaniard who immigrated to Puerto Rico, where he became one of Puerto Rico’s preeminent TV producers. One of his TV shows, "No Te Duermas", was an audience favorite for years. Suau also distinguished himself as a photographer of many of Puerto Rico’s leading celebrities...the photography used for this poster and the one he designed for the Primera Muestra Mundial de Teatro Experimental in 1973 is his work.

He is also known for directing the TV Movie "En Aquella PLaya" (1989), writing and directing "Ocho Puertas" (2003), directing "En mi País" (2004), and acted as himself in the documentary "El Accidente Feliz" (2020).  More recently, he co-produced the documentary movie "Los lunes a las 9:00” which came out in the Carribean Cinemas in Puerto Rico in 2022.

Emilio S. Belaval (born in Fajardo in 1903; died in San Juan in 1973) Storyteller, playwright, essayist and lawyer. He was part of the literary generation of the thirties who dedicated themselves to forming a uniquely Puerto Rican theatrical movement that distinguished itself from the Spanish dramatic tradition.  He studied law at the University of Puerto Rico in Río Piedras and obtained his diploma in 1927. He served as a lawyer from 1927 to 1941, as a district judge in the courts of Bayamón and San Juan. from 1941 to 1953, and as an associate justice on the Supreme Court from 1953 to 1967...of note, he was the secretary of the Hays Commission which in 1938 was tasked with investigating the Masacre de Ponce.

He was president of the Ateneo Puertoriqueño, considered the most important cultural institution in Puerto Rico, and Pro-Arte Musical organization; founder and director of the Areyto Dramatic Society; founding member of the Puerto Rican Academy of the Spanish Language and the Academy of Arts and Sciences of Puerto Rico. He was an author of short stories and an essayist but really made a name for himself as a playwright.  He wrote many theatrical pieces, again promoting a uniquely Puerto Rican dramatic style, of which "La Muerte" is one.

The director, Piri Fernández (San Juan,1925-2003) was a playwright, essayist, actress, theater director, and professor of Literature at the University of Puerto Rico.  She was the director of the Teatro Experimental del Ateneo Puertoriqueño from 1961-1965.  She was featured in Katherine Fords book "The Theater of Revisions in the Hispanic Carribean" (2017) in which Ford states “Piri Fernandez is one of the important names that helped to consolidate modern Puerto Rico theater and, with Myrna Casas, is perhaps the most important woman of the stage during this time."

 Poster Measures: 33 1/4 H × 25 1/16 in W  Semi-glossy paper.

Condition Issues:

I have 2 of these posters; both showing noticeable edgewear particularly on the 2 sides, including small tears, crimping and folds.  One is in slightly better condition than the other so I will give the better of the 2 to the first buyer and will take something off the price for the second buyer.  The paper is slightly discolored, as is the case with posters this old.  The true color of the poster is what you see in the bottom-right quadrant of the first photo.  The orange tint to rest of that photo and in the other photos is a reflection of sunlight.

It will be wrapped in acid-free paper and sent in a poster tube.  Sorry, no returns on posters given how easy it is to damage them if mishandled.  I must be contacted within 24 hours and a pic sent, if you find an issue with the poster, upon delivery, that I haven’t mentioned above.
