Rudi Völler’s side failed to win any of their three group matches in Portugal that summer, with the Czech Republic and the Netherlands advancing to the knockout stages. Völler resigned following Germany’s 2-1 defeat to the Czech Republic and was soon replaced by Jürgen Klinsmann.
