Lot of Nine Early Journals, Lewis & Clark High School, Spokane, Washington, 1912-1914

Nine literary journals from Lewis & Clark High School in Spokane Washington. The publications once belonged to Margaret (Marguerite) Elias (1896 Montana-1984 Spokane), who never married and whose occupation is listed as "keeping house." Her name is on the back of several of the issues.

Softcovers, all illustrated in black and white, most with decorative colors.  Contents include articles of general interest, articles about school activities.  Most include photographs of students. The three that are entitled "Senior Number" have more pages and seem to have doubled as also the yearbook for that year.  Very good condition, some ruffling of edges of covers. An interesting "history" of the school in the early 1900s.

The second public school that was built in Spokane was constructed in 1883 on the present site of Lewis and Clark High School.  The four-room, wooden frame building was named Central High School. The building was in service for approximately seven years until the school could no longer accommodate the growing student body. In 1891 a new building was completed, also called Central High School until September 1908, then South Central High School as a new North Central High School opened.

In 1910 a fire destroyed most of South Central High School’s building – and South students began attending school at North Central.  This lasted for about a year-and-a-half, during which time the two schools were called “Spokane High School”.  South Central was rebuilt and reopened in 1912 – and re-named Lewis & Clark High School.

In May 1912 the school published the first issue of the Lewis & Clark Journal – that first journal is included in this group.  The journal evolved from the earlier Orange & Black that was issued by Spokane High School. Both journals were published monthly during the school year, carried articles about school life and featured photographs and information about graduating seniors. By 1920 the name of the publication changed to The Tiger.
