1937 Leland Stanford Junior University Yearbook, QUAD, Palo Alto, California. Photos 1, 2 and 3 show the front cover, back cover and binding. Photo # 4 shows the Title Page. Photo # 5 shows an ad for Richfield Oil Company. The Richfield Oil Corporation was founded in 1905 and opened its first automotive service station in Los Angeles in 1917. The company fell to the Great Depression and went into receivership in 1931 and was acquired by Citgo. Richfield Oil Company emerged from receivership in 1936 after the Rio Grande Oil Company bought it. So that was about the time when this ad was purchased in the Stanford Yearbook. During World War II the Richfield Oil tanks were bombarded by the Imperial Japanese Army on February 23, 1942 in an attack of the Ellwood Oil Field, which west of the City of Santa Barbara. This attack by the Japanese submarine named I-7 was the first attack on the continental United States during the war. The ad shows Vernal Falls in Yosemite National Park. Vernal Falls is a 317 foot waterfall on the Merced River just downstream of Nevada Falls. Photo # 6 shows an ad for Brookdale Lodge in Brookdale, California, Santa Cruz County in the San Lorenzo Valley between Boulder Creek and Ben Lomond on Highway 9. Brookdale Lodge was a historic resort complex and was famous for decades, known especially for the stream running the restaurant. In 1922 landscape architect Horace Cotton of San Francisco who was hired to draw the plans for Brookdale. In its day the Brookdale Lodge was the 2nd most popular resort in California and hosted the rich and famous. President Herbert Hoover visited quite often and he enjoyed fishing off the dining room bridge. Three songs were written about the Lodge. Photo # 7 shows an ad by Crocker Union talking about the Stanford Quad. Photo # 8 shows an announcement about the new Stanford Memorial Lodge. Photo # 9 shows the Sorority Rushing Time: starting at the top, shown are Jean Gibson at the Theta House. the four girls are: Barbara Riley, Jean Webb, Barbara Rogers and Patsy Rhem. Roberta Rankin and Virginia Valentine are off for tea. Coline Upshaw and Barbara Racer in the light of the candles. Photo 10 shows more Sorority Rushing: Upper left sows Pledge night at the Pi Phi House, lower right with 2 more tea goers at the Theta Door, the bottom photo shows Ruth Goodan, Patricia Johnson, Shirley Wyeth and Sally Holt at the Pi Phi House.
