Joseph Henry Sharp was an American painter born in 1859 in Bridgeport, Ohio. He is best known for his paintings of Native American culture and life in the American West during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Sharp began his career as an illustrator and portrait painter before turning his attention to the American West. He traveled extensively throughout the region, living among and studying Native American tribes. His paintings often depicted Native American rituals, ceremonies, and everyday life, capturing the beauty and complexity of their cultures.

Sharp was a founding member of the Taos Society of Artists, a group of painters who settled in the artistic community of Taos, New Mexico. He spent much of his career there, painting scenes of Native American life and the dramatic landscapes of the region. Sharp’s work was highly regarded in his time, and he received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. He was a member of the National Academy of Design and the Society of American Artists, and his paintings were exhibited in galleries and museums across the country.

Today, Sharp is remembered as one of the most important painters of the American West. His paintings continue to captivate audiences with their vivid depictions of Native American culture and the beauty of the American landscape.
