Covering Feininger’s career from 1907 to 1949, this catalogue highlights the
graphic works of the artist, and particularly the woodblock prints produced
during his Bauhaus period from 1918 to 1922. The exhibition held at the MuMa
in Le Havre, France, is the first monographic presentation of Feininger’s work
in France, and has been made possible thanks to the generosity of one
passionate collector. The touching and poetic works reveal Feininger as a
politically engaged artist, whose convictions led to his involvement with the
Bauhaus as Walter Gropius’ first faculty appointment in 1919. This catalogue
offers a study of the unique and coherent work of this modern master who
bridged the gap between Europe and North America.
