I ship only by USPS Priority Mail & Express Mail, no exceptions. I NEVER ship silver in envelopes. I neither solicit nor accept offers. Listed items will not be marked down during the listing duration. East Lake, also known as Lyonnaise, was first marketed in 1879 and made into the 1890s. The pattern was popular, and survives in quantity. Birds, fans, and flowers show the Japanese influence in the design. When a pattern has two names, it usually means there were two venues for selling it, such as jewelry stores and mail order houses. This pattern appears with a variety of Rogers marks, the mark of Holmes & Edwards, Webster Int'l, and James W. Tufts, as well as retailers' marks, including Montgomery Ward & Co.. The butter knife has the (anchor) Rogers (anchor) mark. Old silverware from before the First World War used a butter serving knife in which the handle stands at a 90' angle to the blade. These are called twist handle butter knives. They were a standard form of the knife used for serving butter and made for some time down until about 1917. They sit nicely on the table, with the pattern showing on the flat part and the blade balanced on its edge. Old catalogs show them mounted in the brackets of domed butter dishes, but I have never been able to make them stay that way. The twist handle butter knife offered here measures about 7 1/4". This is not a piece of new silver. It shows the patina of as much as 140 years of careful use. There are the light scratches which constitute normal patina. There is no monogram. Silver is softly lustrous. There is no silver loss, which is unusual in a piece of this age. The pattern is crisp and clear. The blade is decorated with floral motifs, a bird, and a diagonal band of geometrics. This server has been carefully used and well cared for, and comes with a flannel sleeve which helps prevent tarnish. I polish all silver before listing on eBay. Please email with any questions before bidding. PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE AUCTION DESCRIPTION CAREFULLY. BY BIDDING YOU AGREE TO ABIDE BY MY TERMS OF SALE including the cost and method of shipping and my return policy. I welcome international bidders, but remember that shipping charges can be high. Ask before you bid. Winning bidder to pay shipping charges unless otherwise specified. I ship by United States Postal Service only. I ship all silverware via USPS Priority Mail in boxes. I NEVER ship silverware in envelopes. I insure ALL shipping, as I sell old and scarce items that cannot be easily replaced. Domestic shipping charge for 1 pound or under is now $8.10 which is Priority Mail. International shipping charges vary widely, and I now must use only International Priority shipping, in order to be able to insure the package, purchase a tracking number and proof of delivery, all of which protect both buyer and seller. I now print shipping labels online to keep shipping costs down as much as possible, so I can ship only to the buyers confirmed address. I regret that I can no longer ship gifts directly to the recipient. Payment in US funds only, and I can accept only eBays payment system. I must receive payment in full within 7 days after the end of auction or a store purchase . Due to misuse of a former return policy, I will no longer accept returns. I will of course take responsibility for items that arrive damaged or if there is a serious error in the listing.
