Gilbert James French (1804 -1866) was born in Edinburgh, where his father is said to have been a manufacturer. He was apprenticed to a clothier and emigrated first to Sheffield and then to Bolton, Lancashire, where he settled and developed the manufacture of textiles worn by clergymen and used at church services. He wrote a number of works of literary and antiquarian interest, including a life of Samuel Crompton. He was a member of the Society of Antiquaries, President of the Mechanics Institution in Bolton and encouraged the establishment of the Bolton Free Library.
