What's the mystery behind Fords Gen5 4WD Ford Explorers PTU Failures?
During regular scheduled maintenance, we discovered that the PTU Unit on our personal Gen5 2014 Ford Explorer Sport was leaking Fluid. Draining the unit, we had also discovered that it had lost over half of its oil volume. Why did this happen, what was causing it. So we took a deep dive into solving this mystery.
What we found was that the OEM Vent cap's internal filter system clog's resulting in over pressurization of the unit during normal driving conditions.. This over pressurization forces the fluid out thought the lower vent tube and or other weak points in the case or shaft seals. In our particular case the weak spot was the bottom of the vent hose where it connects to the top of the PTU Unit.
This in turn causes substantial fluid loss to the point that the unit is inadequately lubricated and overheats. The Overheating from the fluid losses causes pre-mature failure of you PTU. This is also the reason why replacement PTU units can fail within 20 to 30K miles if the vent hose is reused and not replaced.
Fords OEM Vent Cap / hose assembly can cost as much $40 Retail but why put the same part on only to get the same results?
So our quest began by looking at other brands with 4WD drive systems Of other Foreign and Domestic car manufacturer models. Armed with this information, it gave us the knowledge we needed to design a much better vent unit. This Kit is result of that research and months of development combined with months of testing on numerous vehicles.
What are the benefits of this kit?
Our kit helps your PTU unit breath easier with an non clogging design. The kit also puts the PTU's vent up higher in to cleaner / cooler air. The added benefit is that the vent hose is now high enough to serve as a fill point for your PTU when servicing the unit.
While this kit will not save your PTU from failure if it is already toast, It will in turn help increase the life span of one leaking but in good maintainable condition.
The extended Vent line can also be used as a fill point when servicing your PTU assembly's fluid.
This kit replaces the OEM (stock) PTU Vent hose / cap sub assembly with a advanced freer flowing design.
Warranty:
Select comports are 3D printed from High temp UV resistance capable of wisthanding over 500 degrees. These 3D printed components are covered by our lifetime warranty again manufacturing defects. Should one of these components break. simply email us your contact information and attach a phot of the defective part for a no charge replacement.

Installation
Step 1
Remove the stock vent hose sub assembly from your vehicle. Access can be gained by removing the upper air box sub assembly and lessening the rear air supply tube. The OEM cap can be located around the black of the rear cylinder head where the transmission meat the engine.
Step 2
Attach the bottom of the new vent kit hose to the vent nipple where the OEM hose was attached to the top of your PTU Unit. Secure the bottom of the hose to the vent nipple connector wit hone of the larger zip ties included in the kit. It is not necessary but highly recommended to help prevent any possible fluid loss.
Step 3
Route the new vent hose assembly so the new vent cap valve sub assembly comes up the side of the brake master cylinder.
Please note: It is idea to have some slack / slight bend In the hose to allow for some engine flex / movement
Step 4
Attach the PTU vent cap mounting bracket to the square strut brace cross bar and secure with one of the larger zip ties supplied in the kit. Insert the zip tie though the brackets slot and wrap over and around the strut brace tube then pull tight. (Loop around the strut brace tube).
