"It's 1909 and a Yorkshire coal mine has just hired a new manager, Richard Sandman, to find a way to make it more profitable. Sandman notices that the pit ponies, with the exception of 14 year-old Flash, are slow in hauling the coal. He decides that the ponies must be replaced with machinery. Two of the little boys who help tend the horses in their underground stables, Dave and Tommy, are concerned about what will happen to the horses once the machinery comes in. When they discover that the ponies are to be slaughtered, they ask Sandman's daughter, Alice, to help them stage a daring rescue and steal the ponies to save their lives."
