THE GRAND STAND AT BULUWAYO.
It is said that in a French colony the first things that are established are a café and a theatre. Of a British colony it may properly be said that the race-course and the club are always among the primitive institutions of the community. It is never safe to present a photograph of a South African town as an up-to-date representation, for matters move so fast in that favoured district that the shanty of yesterday may be the palace of to-day, and what was a collection of a few huts last year may be a modern town this year. No doubt Buluwayo has already got far beyond the simple stage which is here shown; but though the Grand Stand may not be of the latest pattern, the horseflesh and the riders are of the first quality, and the energy and enthusiasm displayed are worthy of the best traditions of the Turf.
