WHAT IS VERMICULITE

Vermiculite is a naturally occurring mineral that expands when heated. Expanded vermiculite has unique and versatile characteristics; it is lightweight, provides energy savings when used as insulation, it is non-combustible, highly absorbent, pH neutral, inert, non-reactive to all but very strong acids and compressible. These desirable characteristics  allow vermiculite

Vermiculite is the standard among professional nurserymen for most horticultural uses including the insertion of cuttings. Vermiculite may be used directly as poured from the bag for root cuttings. Water thoroughly  and insert cuttings. Over wetting  is not a serious concern if container drainage is provided. Vermiculite will promote maximum root growth in less time.

SOIL CONDITIONING

Where the native soil is heavy or sticky, gentle mixing of vermiculite up to one-half the volume of the soil is recommended. This creates air channels  and allows the soil mix to breathe.

Mixing vermiculite in flower and vegetable gardens or in potted plants will provide the necessary air to maintain vigorous plant growth. Where soils are sandy, mixing of vermiculite into the soil will allow the soil to hold water and air needed for growth.

SEED GERMINATION

Use vermiculite alone or mixed with soil, perlite or peat. Very little watering is required. More seeds germinate – faster germination too! Where vermiculite is mixed half and half with soil, peat, or composted pine bark, no additionalfeeding is required up to the time of transplanting.

HOUSE PLANTS

Vermiculite eliminates the problem of packed-down soil in flower pots. Mix half and half with soil, perlite, peat and/or composted pine bark. It provides excellent air and moisture control for house plants. Lightens and aerates soil. Roots can spread out through the pot. Less frequent watering is required.
