Berwick is also known as Diana. When patterns have more than one name, it usually indicates that there were different ways of selling them. This pattern first came out in 1904, and was made for about 15 years. This design is very high style Art Nouveau, a fantasy of poppies spilling down the handle in asymmetrical fashion. Berwick is the name of an English Castle. Diana is the Roman Goddess of the hunt. Somehow both names are applied to this pattern.
Tablespoons are sort of the unglamorous workhorse of the silverware world. They do not have the pizazz of the berry shells and jelly spoons, nor do they fit into the neat counts of place settings. But they are there for serving regular portions of food, and no matter what one does, there comes an event where there are just not enough tablespoons. The reason we have them can be symbolized by a person known as Lucretia Borgia. She was a famous poisoner, so dinner at her house was fraught with peril, as they say in romance novels. The custom of serving from a common dish (which actually is much older than LB, but so is poisoning) arose. If you have ever seen your host/ess set down a dish of food, and in your sight stir it to mix everything together, you know this is a subtle signal that there is nothing in that bowl that your host/ess would fear.
The 3 tablespoons serving spoons offered here measure about 8 1/4". These are not pieces of new silver. They show the patina of as much as 115 years of careful use. There are the light scratches which constitute normal patina. There is no monogram. Silver is softly lustrous. There is no silver loss. The pattern is crisp and clear.
