This book will provide excellent background of facts and analysis about the historical involvement and commitment of the Episcopal Church toward the American Indian. The book is highly researched and occasionally illustrated with drawings, photos and charts. Throughout it mentions particular leaders, ministers, and individual missions and historical influences on them. The appendices also include some essays by particular ministers and bishops and other relevant, concise information.

The book is developed in 9 parts on these topics: 1) How it all began;  2) Missions of the Church of England;  3) The New England Scene: Setting lasting patterns in Native ministry;  4) The Anglican/Episcopal Church and the great Iroquois Confederacy;  5) Episcopal mission in the Great lakes area and northern plains;    6) Episcopal mission in Southwest;    7) Episcopal work in mountains and desert;   8) Episcopal Church’s first 100 years in Alaska; 9) National church in Indian Ministry from the 1960’s.

The Appendices include nine parts on these topics: 1) Chronology;  2) Indian Treaty Rights;   3) Native American spirituality;   4) Survey of Native American Episcopal ministry;   5) Reflections by Rt Rev Harold Jones;    6) National Advisory Committee1965-67;   7) National Committee on Indian work 1987;   8) Covenant of Oklahoma; 9) Bishop Whipple’s letter to President Lincoln.
