• DISCUSSION: Amazing rare authentic Licio Zanetti Italian Murano heavy art glass bowl or cigar ashtray, circa the 1960s accented with a stunning dolphin figure, complete with original hand-etched signature. The piece was carefully created to have multiple flowing lines and accents that make it present as a complex sort of 'flowing molten' design that includes several nifty ways to hold a cigar (see photos). Our research points to this piece as at least very rare and most likely a one-of-a-kind. Pontil/base was ground-flat, highly polished, shows the expected shelf-wear of its age, and is clearly signed with his distinctive longhand, "Zanetti L" The signature is light and was hard to capture in photos, several of which you can see by looking closely–especially if you are familiar with how he signs with diamond pen in hand. The piece is completely damage-free and even more beautiful in person! What an excellent addition to an art glass collection, or a thoughtful gift for a very special cigar smoker!

FULL CONDITION REPORT: We thoroughly inspected this piece and found no cracks, chips, nicks, scuffs, flea bites, flakes, hairlines, notable scratches, or repairs with no evidence of grinding or restoration. Any natural indentations, bubbles, tool marks, and/or any other natural textural features are all original to this piece and normal for hand-blown glass. Wear to the base is consistent with age. Please review all high-resolution photographs, at full size, in forming your own opinions.

About the Artist

Zanetti Vetreria Artistica

Licio Zanetti
Italian, 1915–1985

Licio Zanetti, at the furnace, c.1958

Zanetti Vetreria Artistica was founded in 1956 by the glassmaster Oscar Zanetti and his son Licio. The furnace quickly distinguished itself for the artistic quality of Master Licio Zanetti's glass sculptures, and soon took its place among the most prestigious companies on Murano. In 1989, Licio stepped down in favor of his son Oscar, who had been working by his side since his youth. From his father, he inherited his artistic talent, which he learned to express through the ancient glass techniques of Murano as well as through new techniques invented in the furnace itself. His predilection for naturalistic subjects is reflected in a lively collection inspired by the flora and fauna of his beloved Venetian Lagoon: blown or massive glass objects, all executed rigorously by hand, in the best tradition of the great masters of Murano.

INVESTMENT: COLLECTIBLE ART GLASS

A smart investment in art has for some time had a proven record of stable, healthy return, but has been generally considered to be restricted to the very wealthiest among us. In the world of hot, hand-blown/worked art glass, each piece is truly unique, and many pieces can be acquired at affordable figures for nearly everyone. If you appreciate the beauty of art, it can be a way to display and enjoy your investments.

When considering art glass as an investment, the primary consideration–aside from personal aesthetics–is essentially a work's prospective increase in value or appreciation potential. Evaluating that always rests with four primary points: RARITY (supply), trending DESIRABILITY to collectors (demand), and CONDITION is an essential element because even a small chip or deep scratch can (and will) make a literal world of difference in current and future value! So, please carefully inspect what you are buying and be sure to protect what you own! You may also feel more secure knowing your investment is not an attractive burglary target, due to its relative weight and especially its vulnerability to transport damage. Look for a recognized signature, a genuine original label, or at least a well-trusted seller or collector's attribution. Because the fourth, and most important factor is AUTHENTICITY because without that, nothing else matters!

Brief Murano History

The island of Murano near Venice has been producing glass since the thirteenth century1292. Having been banned from mainland Venice, for the threat of fire hazard, the island's glass furnaces first produced beads and mirrors, soon progressing to chandeliers and architectural stained glass for Italy’s hundreds of churches, chapels, and basilicas. Soon they widened their output to include pressed glass, tableware, and art glass. The surge in popularity of beautiful, high-quality decorative glass in the post-war boom, created a huge mid-20th-century expansion in demand and production on Murano Island. Notable designers include Flavio Poli, Archimede Seguso, Ricardo Licata, Gino Cenedese, Paolo Venini, Antonio Salviati, Dino Martens, Martinuzzi, Mandruzzato and Ercole and Angelo Barovier to name but a very few. The hardworking Italian glassblowers of Murano can truly be called the Godfathers of modern-day glass.

PHOTOGRAPHY POLICY: Photos are considered part of the listing description. We try to give you as close to an "in-person" view as possible. That said, we shoot items in as best light and angle to show their true beauty. Any unusual white or yellow spots you may perceive on a photo are usually glare, due to our photography environment, unless otherwise noted. If necessary for accuracy, we color-correct photos to match the actual item to our computer monitor--yours may vary. We try to show complex pieces in a variety of lighting conditions in an effort to exhibit the full range of the piece's actual appearance. Should you desire additional shots, specific lighting conditions, or clarification on an image, please feel free to send a note through the eBay system! Photos are NOT representative of the actual size. Please view all high-resolution photographs--at 100%. Any other object is included for scale only. Close-up photos will always tend to show and exaggerate minor defects. Please keep this in mind: defects seen at 100% resolution may not even be visible to the naked eye! If you have questions please ask before bidding!

NORMAL WEAR: Vintage or antique items will undoubtedly show minor signs of normal wear and/or patina. When we find unusual wear, manufacturer's defects, damage, and/or repairs, they will ALWAYS be noted in the description. Minor usage marks will not be remarkable.

OPINION: Description and condition statements are always our opinion, based on our combined knowledge, experience, and research. Statements regarding maker, age, origin, etc. particularly on unmarked pieces, should be evaluated and confirmed by you the buyer, as you are the final judge. Though we are avid collectors, we are not experts on each item. If you know something we have omitted or misstated, please contact us to share. We strive for 100% accuracy! Your help is always welcome and appreciated!

GLASS MASTERS: The alchemy of hot glass making is an art and complex craft involving the 1150°F heat of the glass furnace, age-old and newly developed techniques, tools, and proprietary chemical formulas to achieve the amazing art glass you'll see in our store. Master glass artist status is not achieved quickly or easily. Reaching that high level takes some 20 years of learning and honing the many, varied skills of the master glassblower. And, glassblowing is rarely done alone, but nearly always requires the teamwork of the gaffer's assistants to successfully produce this wonderful artwork!
