Here is an ornamental evergreen tree, reaching 10 to 20 m tall, bearing fleshy fruits that are up to 5 cm (2.0 in) long and 4 cm (1.6 in) wide. The outside of the fruit is covered by a pink-red, roughly-textured rind that is inedible but easily removed to expose a layer of sweet, translucent white flesh. Lychees are eaten in many different dessert dishes, and are especially popular in China, throughout South-East Asia, along with South Asia. They are perfect served in fruit salads or with ice cream.
The tree produces clusters of small, white, yellow or green flowers which are distinctively fragrant and has dense green foliage. The roots will not tolerate being submerged in water for too long without suffering irreparable damage, so no matter the consistency of the soil, it has to be well draining. It is predominantly cultivated in USDA hardiness zones 10 and 11 where the temperature never gets low enough to where the nights are frosty, and that means that Florida, California, and Hawaii have some of the best growing conditions. A prolonged drop in temperatures below 30°F can result in lasting damage specifically to young, unprotected Trees.
