ANTIQUE
CAST IRON
PLAQUE
AFTER CLODION
PUTTI WITH GOAT
Estimated to have been made during the latter years of the C19th this
cast iron plaque or frieze features plump putti playing with a goat. It is in
the manner of the famous French sculptor Claude Michel Clodion (born 1738) and
typical of the subject matter of this famous pupil of J B Pigalles.
The Bacchanalian scene is in high relief with the goat centre stage
surrounded by the children in mocking manner, one is holding a stylistic mask
in pretence of mirroring its face. This perhaps has some mythological
significance unfortunately unknown to us.
The piece is heavy for its size (please see specs. below) and sports the
blackened finish it came with to the front but has a surface film of rust to
the reverse. It was purchased from a local estate sale.
Dramatic and exciting on display.
