The American Civil War - Chancellorsville - "Lee's Triumph"

The Civil War began with small engagements but expanded over 4 years to include the largest land battles ever fought in the Western Hemisphere. This playset provides young collectors with the soldiers and accessories to re-fight the crucial engagement at Chancellorsville, often referred to as "Lee's Greatest Triumph".
In January of 1863, following the disastrous Fredericksburg Campaign, Union General Joseph E. Hooker took command of the the Army of the Potomac. His intention was to outmaneuver Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, trapping the Southern forces in a pincer movement. Instead, it was Lee who outmaneuvered the Union Army, catching them by surprise after a daring march around the Union flank by Stonewall Jackson's corps.

Around 5:39 pm 28,000 Confederates emerged from cover on the right flank of the Union army. The Federal troops were caught completely by surprise and were thrown into chaos. With a few exceptions, there was little or no defense put up against the Rebs in the opening stage of the battle. But because the attack had started so late in the day, Jackson was unable to complete his victory. And most disastrously for the Southern cause, Jackson was accidentally shot by his own troops while scouting a route to push his men to continue the assault in the darkness. Nevertheless, the Southern Victory resulted in the Army of the Potomac being obliged to retreat. After the great victory, Jackson died of his wounds. depriving Lee of his greatest general.

The figures and accessories from this set can also be used to re-stage battles such as First Bull Run (First Manassas), Seven Pines, Seven Days Battles, Second Bull Run, Shiloh, Fredericksburg, Antietam and others.
