XR-9437 (aka XR-P55) is the second Discman model made by Toshiba. Unlike XR-P9/XR-J9 it does not have IR remote option but has digital tuner. And a hefty price-tag: XR-9437 cost $430 in solid 1986 dollars. This record of being the most expensive Discman will last three years. The King, Sony D-555 with MSRP of $500 enters the field in 1989. It is next to impossible to compare XR-9437 to D-555, they are like Leopard tank and Mercedes sedan. Toshiba build quality may be compared only to Technics SL-XP5, these two Discmans were built by the companies which did not know (or, at least in 1986, did not care) how to make cheap Discmans. Belt-drive CD spindle, solid steel, aluminum, automotive-thick enamel, and plastic as solid as if Toshiba started designing one of their famous BomBeat bboxes but ended up with a mere Discman. Classic "Back to the Future" design: in 1986 this was the only non-square Discman, but ten years later absolutely all Discmans looked more like XR-9437, not square Sonys

Please enjoy the photos and consider making an offer if Sony D-555 and Technics SL-XP5 already in your collection. My strong recommendation: buy one of non-working XR-9437/XR-55 as a beautiful paperweight and admire its build quality. As is evident from the photos, you will need more than one unit to make a working Discman anyway...

Final Note: 1986 was full ten years before CD-R became available. XR-9437 was designed to play Red Book CDs, it does NOT play Orange Book CD-Rs. However, just in case you MUST: one of the photos shows CD-R playable by XR-9437. Mobile Fidelity Gold CD-R is just a re-branded MAM-A CD-R so, evidently, those are playable also
