Loose leaf style binding with a plastic clip to bind pages in. There is minor exterior edge and corner wear to the boards of this binder and it holds the entirety of over 1,300 pages. As constructed, the binder has cloth supports at the hinges. I think that the only potential weak point is that the posts that hold the book together appear to be plastic and not metal.

Because this was a loose leaf style book, whenever changes were made, you were sent new pages in the mail and you would remove the old versions and replace with the new ones. In the case of the Title and Contributor pages here, in the gutter of the spine (Photo 2,3 & 4) you can see printing running up telling you to replace the prior title and contributor and contents pages. It is only these first three leaves that were replaced because there was a new editorship and they wanted their names in print. This is actually the 1945 version of the book but the original owner did what he was told and replaced the first few pages as instructed

PRACTICE OF SURGERY DEAN LEWIS VOLUME XII:

BRAIN- FRACTURES OF THE SKULL- CRANIAL NERVES- SPINAL COLUMN AND CORD- FRACTURES OF THE SPINE- BLOOD VASCULAR SYSTEM- SKIN- SYPHILIS- ELECTROSURGERY

From " description of Walter Dandy:

Walter Dandy Super Surgeon A profile of this famed neurosurgeon is presented with human interest anecdotes collected primarily from his residents, the men who knew him best. The major contributions from his hand included not only new operations, diagnostic ventriculography and pneumoencephalography, but also 169 outstanding papers and five books, the last a monumental work of 600 pages, The Brain, which is the section on brain in Lewis' Practice of Surgery. With the "brain team" of Johns Hopkins, he accomplished more during his neurosurgical career than any man alive, even his mentor, Harvey Cushing. He performed a wealth of work daily, and achieved operative miracles with patients others considered hopeless.

This book is broken into eight sections. With the exception of minor soiling to the end papers and light wear to the boards, the only issue with this book is age related paper toning.

SECTION 1- THE BRAIN BY WALTER E. DANDY- illustrated throughout. The editors of Lewis’ Practice of Surgery first published Dandy’s classic work in 1932 and soon became the standard American neurosurgical text in the decades before and after WW II. 671 PAGES. This is the second printing of this volume, with the replaced first few pages reflecting a printing of 1948.  This is actually the 1945 version but, the Roman Numeral pages in front were replaced in 1948 due to new editors taking over.

SECTION 2- THE CRANIAL NERVES- MAX MINOR PEET- 106 pages

SECTION 3- SPINAL COLUMN AND SPINAL CORD- WILLIAM JASON MIXTER- 127 pages

SECTION 4- FRACTURE AND DISLOCATION OF THE SPINE- WILLIAM JASON MIXTER- 27 pages

SECTION 5A- VARICOSITIES OF THE LOWER EXTREMITY- ALTON OCHSNER- 59 pages
SECTION 5B- THROMBOPHLEBITIS AND PHLEBOTHROMBOSIS BY ALTON OCHSNER AND MICHAEL DEBAKEY - 54 PAGES
SECTION 5- Section 3- SPASM AND OCCLUSION IN PERIPHERAL ARTERIAL DISEASE BY J.J MORTON AND W.J. MERLE SCOTT -34 PAGES
SECTION 5- Section 4- ARTERIAL DISEASES OF THE EXTREMITIES BY J.J MORTON AND W.J MERLE SCOTT- 24 PAGES
Section 5 differs from the first edition of 1932, which was originally one 157 page article by Ochsner. For this edition it was broken down to A,B, 3 and 4, with multiple authors, and the page count is off due to this.

SECTION 6- SURGICAL DISEASES OF THE SKIN- OLIVER S ORMSBY- 86 pages
SECTION 7- SURGERY AND SYPHILIS- ALBERT KEIDEL- 79 pages

SECTION 8 ELECTROSURGERY- GRANT E WARD- 48 pages

There are no slouches here. Mixter is credited with changing our understanding of sciatica. The Oschner Clinic first documented the link between cancer and cigarette use. Though ridiculed by his peers (who liked to smoke Camels) his exposition of the links between tobacco and lung cancer was his most important contribution.

It does come down to this being the second printing of this almost 700 page treatment of the Brain by Walter E. Dandy. The first printing was in 1932. It was another 16 years before it was reprinted here and was not printed again until the 1950's.

Other than the minor wear to the boards and minor stains inside on the end papers, you have some page toning and that is it for the negatives. This volume is crisp and clean and in overall exceptional condition.

For International Buyers:  Media Mail shipments only. Please note that, although you are likely paying very high shipping costs to have this item sent to you, I am not charging those costs. In the case of books, I utilize "media mail" to get the box to the third party shipper. "Media mail" is a very SLOW speed mailing process reserved for books and records that are potentially very heavy.
