Walter Edward Dandy (April 6, 1886 – April 19, 1946) was an American neurosurgeon and scientist. He is considered one of the founding fathers of neurosurgery, along with Victor Horsley (1857–1916) and Harvey Cushing (1869–1939). Dandy is credited with numerous neurosurgical discoveries and innovations, including the description of the circulation of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain, surgical treatment of hydrocephalus, the invention of air ventriculography and pneumoencephalography, the description of brain endoscopy, the establishment of the first intensive care unit

Loose leaf style binding with a metal clip to bind pages in (PHOTO 8). There is weakening to the hinges of this binder and significant loss of the brown coloring, exposing the cloth below on the spine edges (PHOTO 2 & 9), but it remains intact and holds the entirety of over 1,300 pages. It was another 16 years before the second printing  of 1948. I am also selling a copy of that one but at a significantly lower price.

As constructed, the binder has cloth supports at the hinges that are fully holding (last photo) PRACTICE OF SURGERY DEAN LEWIS VOLUME XII: BRAIN- FRACTURES OF THE SKULL- CRANIAL NERVES- SPINAL COLUMN AND CORD- FRACTURES OF THE SPINE- BLOOD VASCULAR SYSTEM- SKIN- SYPHILIS- ELECTROSURGERY From " description of Walter Dandy: Walter Dandy Super Surgeon A profile of this famed neurosurgeon is presented with human interest anecdotes collected primarily from his residents, the men who knew him best. The major contributions from his hand included not only new operations, diagnostic ventriculography and pneumoencephalography, but also 169 outstanding papers and five books, the last a monumental work of over 600 pages, The Brain, which is the section on brain in Lewis' Practice of Surgery. With the "brain team" of Johns Hopkins, he accomplished more during his neurosurgical career than any man alive, even his mentor, Harvey Cushing. He performed a wealth of work daily, and achieved operative miracles with patients others considered hopeless.

This book is broken into eight sections.

SECTION 1- THE BRAIN BY WALTER E. DANDY- illustrated throughout. The editors of Lewis’ Practice of Surgery first published Dandy’s classic work in 1932 and soon became the standard American neurosurgical text in the decades before and after WW II. 682 PAGES.
SECTION 2- THE CRANIAL NERVES- MAX MINOR PEET- 106 pages
SECTION 3- SPINAL COLUMN AND SPINAL CORD- WILLIAM JASON MIXTER- 127 pages
SECTION 4- FRACTURE AND DISLOCATION OF THE SPINE- WILLIAM JASON MIXTER- 27 pages
SECTION 5- BLOOD VASCULAR SYSTEM- ALTON OCHSNER- 157 pages  (NEARLY THE ENTIRETY OF THIS SECTION HAS A HARD CORNER BUMP)- (PHOTO 6 & 7)
SECTION 6- SURGICAL DISEASES OF THE SKIN- OLIVER S ORMSBY- 81 pages
SECTION 7- SURGERY AND SYPHILIS- ALBERT KEIDEL- 78 pages
SECTION 8 ELECTROSURGERY- GRANT E WARD- 48 pages

There are no slouches here. Mixter is credited with changing our understanding of sciatica. The Oschner Clinic first documented the link between cancer and cigarette use. Though ridiculed by his peers (who liked to smoke Camels) his exposition of the links between tobacco and lung cancer was his most important contribution.

There is an owner name on front end paper. There is a small tear in the front paper paste down (PHOTO 8)

There is age related paper toning throughout.  There is too much paper to fit in this binder. Fewer than ten pages extend a miniscule past the edge of the text block resulting in minor edge wear to those leaves. Within the Dandy book, only page 613 sticks out ever so slightly.

It does come down to this being the first printing of this almost 700 page treatment of the Brain by Walter E. Dandy Other than what is mentioned above, you have some page toning and that is it for the negatives.

Within the entire series of Lewis' Practice of Medicine, this is the only volume with such a monumental work. If you take a look at Worthpoint, I sold a copy of this back in March 2015.
