Flag of French Tonkin from 1890-1920 & South Vietnam Flag
This flag design was used as the national flag of Vietnam from 1948 until 1975 when Saigon fell to the communist regime and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Flag became the national flag. The yellow flag with three horizontal red lines is also known today as the Vietnamese Heritage and Freedom Flag. It is internationally recognized as being representative of Vietnam. The three horizontal red lines represent the common blood running through North, Central, and South Vietnam. This same flag design was also used as the flag of French Tonkin from 1890 – 1920.
