History : In 1787 the Bounty , a small merchant vessel, sailed from Spithead to Tahiti to purchase specimens of breadfruit and take them to the British possessions in the East Indies. The mission was never completed due to disagreements between Captain William Bligh and his lieutenant, Fletcher Christian, which led to the revolt of half the crew on 28 April 1789 and caused the famous mutiny. Captain Bligh and his remaining loyal sailors were put on a longboat which traveled 4,000 miles to the Dutch Indies where they were rescued and sent back to their homeland. The mutineers instead settled on Pitcain Island.
