Ex-voto Mexican
Folk Art Thanks to Virgin for Finding Donkey – Tin Sign Retablo
- This ex-voto is a
handmade wall hanging – a signed piece of Mexican folk art. This is a prayer of
thanks in words and picture, all hand painted directly onto the tin.
- The artwork shows a
village scene on a dark and cloudy night.
- This is the story:
(loosely translated)
- “El Pidio Cardenas (his
name) a neighbor of Coyoyoc (where he lives) gives thanks with this retablo to
the Virgin of the Lightning (Virgencita del Rayo). On August 27 1957 when he
was out delivering milk he lost his donkey and prayed for someone to help. He
was able to find the donkey without letting him be stolen.”
- Cardenas is on the
right of the donkey and the would-be donkey-thief is on the left in the
background. The Virgin of the Lightning is in the cloud.
- Colors are primarily in
earth tones with a brighter Virgin.
- The tin sign measures
just over 11-3/4 inches across x 9 inches in height.
- Artwork is signed “L.
Valencia”
- This is an original
piece of artwork, bought from the artist's family in Mexico City.
- Because this is a
handmade piece of art on a piece of scrap metal and because of the type of art,
the artist intended irregularities, uneven edges, slight bends in the tin, some
rust, scratches and paint splotches.
- The piece of tin used
is not rigid. There may be light and camera shadows showing in the photo of the
back of the tin.
