RED LIGHT (1949)
Starring George Raft, Virginia Mayo
Based on the short story "This Guy Gideon" by Don 'Red' Barry. Producer/director Roy Del Ruth bought the rights to that story, but hated the uncommercial title. So he also bought the rights to Weldon Reeder's short story "Red Light" simply because he liked the title better.
Composer Dimitri Tiomkin reused some of his scoring from It's a Wonderful Life (1946) - when George Bailey comes back renewed from being shown a vision of if he'd never been born.
PLOT
Nick Cherney, in prison for embezzling from a San Francisco trucking company, sees a chance to get back at his former employer John Torno through his young priest brother Jess. He pays fellow prisoner Rocky, who gets out a week before Nick, to murder Jess who, dying, tells revenge-minded brother John that he'd written a clue "in the Bible." Frustrated, John obsessively searches for the missing Gideon Bible from Jess's hotel room. Meanwhile, Nick himself gets out with murder still in his heart. But another factor is in play that none of them (except the murdered Jess) had planned on.
