About the Vollard Suite:

In 1930 the avant-garde art dealer and publisher Ambroise Vollard gave Picasso the commission to produce the 100 etched plates that make up the series in exchange for paintings by Renoir and Cézanne. Though Picasso executed most of the work in a frenzy of creative activity during the spring of 1933, it took him seven years to complete the project and another two for the master printmaker Roger Lacourière to finish printing 230 full sets. Vollard’s sudden death in May 1939, followed by the outbreak of war, meant that the complete sets only came on to the market in the 1950s. Unlike Picasso’s illustrations to Ovid’s Metamorphoses and Balzac’s Le Chef-d’oeuvre inconnu, the images in the Vollard Suite have no literary source. Picasso inscribed each plate with the year, month and day that he drew the image, suggesting that we should engage with the Vollard Suite as though it were a visual diary of the artist’s creative life in the 1930s. This feels right. Because the series was made over a period of years, both the imagery and the emotional register of the prints constantly shifts to reflect Picasso’s erotic and artistic obsessions, marital vicissitudes, and the darkening political situation in Europe.
